Ways to Give

Charitable Gift Annuity

A charitable gift annuity can be an excellent way to achieve your financial goals and leave a legacy gift to support the parishes, schools, and ministries that serve the needs of our community within the Archdiocese of Chicago.

In exchange for your irrevocable gift of cash or securities, the Archdiocese of Chicago agrees to pay you or a loved one fixed payments for life. The balance is used to support the archdiocese, your parish, school, or a ministry – as designated by you.

Benefits to You:

  • Receive fixed payments for life – for yourself or a loved one you designate.
  • Provide financial support for a loved one that is age 60 or older.
  • Enjoy an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of your gift, if you itemize.
  • Schedule payments according to your financial needs.
  • A portion of each annuity payment will be tax-free (through life expectancy).
  • Possibly reduce capital gains tax liability for gifts of appreciated securities.
  • Remove the amount of your gift from your taxable estate.
  • Make a legacy gift that will advance God’s work and serve the future needs of our community within the Archdiocese of Chicago.
  • Be welcomed as a member of the Lumen Legacy Society – our way of thanking you for your generosity.

How It Works:

  1. Make a gift of $10,000 or more to the Archdiocese of Chicago. Fund your gift annuity with cash or securities.

  2. Receive fixed payments for life – for yourself or a loved one age 60 or older. Payment rates are based upon the age of the annuitant at the time you establish the gift annuity.

  3. Enjoy immediate and future tax benefits, including a federal income tax deduction for a portion of your gift, if you itemize.

  4. What remains after your lifetime will support your parish, school, a ministry or the archdiocese – as designated by you.

A deferred charitable gift annuity allows you to postpone the first payment to a date of your choice. With a deferred gift annuity, you establish the gift annuity today, receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction for the current year, but defer the payments until a designated date sometime in the future. Best of all, your annual payment will be higher when the payments start than they would have been with an immediate gift annuity.
